Sustainable Agro-biodiversity Management in the Mountain Areas of Southern China
China is a country rich in biodiversity. However, genetic erosion has reached alarming proportions, greatly threatening the future of sustainable agro-biodiversity.
“Sustainable Agro-biodiversity Management in the Mountain Areas of Southern China” aims at increasing the capacity and awareness of different stakeholders to jointly manage and use agro-biodiversity in a sustainable way.
In this context, the project introduces innovative strategies and methods to promote agro-biodiversity and biodiversity friendly farming practices at a village level in selected mountain areas of Southern China (Anhui, Chongqing, Hainan, Hubei and Hunan). Conclusions drawn from the project provide a basis for advisory support to national decision-makers in regards to agro-biodiversity policy. The project also plays an advisory role for the Chinese government in complying with various international agreements.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ), the project is being implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in co-operation with the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) of the People’s Republic of China. It is one of the EU-China Biodiversity Programme’s field projects and is co-financed by the EU via the UNDP.
